Richwoods Clobbers Central

From the Journal Star....

Central’s young, inexperienced girls basketball players were coming off a two-week layoff and were no match for a veteran Richwoods team on Tuesday night.
The host Knights won the Mid-State 6 Conference game 63-29.
Central (2-3, 0-1) was held to six points in the first half on 3-for-20 shooting from the field.
The Lions finished 13 of 54 from the field and were 1-for-14 from the free-throw line.
“We’ll get better,” Central coach Meechie Edwards said. “I don’t feel like any team in this conference is too far away. I didn’t feel like they were that much more dominant than we were tonight. (Olivia) Elger is good.”
Elger is the Knights’ sophomore point guard. She scored 18 points in limited minutes and hit three of her five 3-point attempts.
“I thought we lost track of her real early in the game and boom, boom, the game is over,” Edwards said. “You can’t do that with her, and I give credit to her team. She was real patient and got wide-open looks. Every time down the floor, you noticed her. Her maturity kind of took over the game.”
Stephanie Southey added eight points for the Knights (8-0, 2-0). Gabby Cunningham and Ellie Peters each had six rebounds.
“(Central is) very quick. They try to penetrate the middle,” Richwoods coach Heather Cassady said. “So we tried to pack it in on them and let them shoot the 3. And I think we can do a better job of boxing out.”
Most of the second half was played with the Knights’ reserves.
“We let our girls have a chance to play some different positions tonight,” Cassady said.
Israel Evans and Keamber Williams led Central with six points each. Evans had seven of the Lions’ 28 rebounds.
“Richwoods did a really good job of taking care of the ball tonight,” Edwards said. “They’re typically smart and they don’t make dumb passes.”
Central last played Nov. 17 at the Prairie Central Thanksgiving Tournament in Fairbury.
“I thought it was going to benefit us,” Edwards said of the long layoff, “but it backfired on us. I felt we came out just a little rusty. I felt like our first possession was the best one of the game, and that’s a little scary.”
