Coach Suspended Over Hair Rules??

From the Peoria Journal Star....

The dispute that benched Central boys basketball coach Dan Ruffin five games goes back to 2010, when a Peoria High parent and his son went up against a decades-old tradition prohibiting players from wearing long hair.
Parent Larry Alston said he challenged the tradition after his son, Rahkim, then a freshman playing on the freshman team, was told he would have to cut his dreadlocks to play.
Neither Alston nor his son were directly involved in the incident that led to Ruffin’s five-game suspension at the start of this season. Alston’s 2010 challenge, however, led District 150 administrators to order an end to a long-standing tradition that allowed coaches to set appearance guidelines for players.
The issue came up again this season when a basketball assistant reportedly told players with dreadlocks they had to cut their hair, or implied they had to cut their hair, according to slightly varying accounts from different sources. Ruffin maintains neither he or his staff told players to cut their hair or suggested that coaches prefer short hair.
“We were told not to and we haven’t, period,” Ruffin said. “We do what we’re told.”
The fifth and final game of Ruffin’s suspension is Central’s Mid-State 6 Conference opener Friday at Manual.
District 150 cannot comment on personnel matters. However, District 150 spokesman Chris Coplan confirmed that coaches were told both last school year and this year that “the district does not have a policy specific to hair styles, and team decisions should not be made that do not follow district-wide policies.”
Rahkim did not go out for basketball this year. But when Larry Alston heard other players had cut their locks to be on the team, he immediately contacted District 150 Superintendent Grenita Lathan to warn her the practice had not stopped.
Larry Alston said Lathan initially told him it was up to the other parents to lodge complaints, but he persisted and asked the district to investigate. The district conducted an investigation, according to sources, which ultimately resulted in negotiations that ended with Ruffin’s five-game suspension.
Since then, a separate interpretation has emerged to compete with Alston’s. Are Ruffin’s rules unfair to students, as Larry Alston contends, or did District 150 mishandle Ruffin’s discipline?
Alicia Butler, a former District 150 board member, and Terry Knapp, a retired teacher and former teachers’ union president, defended Ruffin last week at a school board meeting.
“I’m livid about how they’ve handled the situation with Dan Ruffin,” said Butler, who is also a Peoria High alumni. “To my knowledge, employee discipline has to be handed down by the board and for the board to do that, there has to be a board policy.”
Larry Alston said he anticipated retaliation against his son and backlash in favor of maintaining a tradition. He charges both occurred.
At one point during Rahkim’s freshman year, according to Larry Alston, Ruffin pulled Rahkim from class to tell him he couldn’t be in the team picture unless he cut his hair. Larry Alston said during his son’s freshman season, coaches constantly, but subtly, brought up Rahkim’s hair. Rahkim also encountered obstacles to trying out his sophomore year, which Larry Alston believes was because of the hair. The younger Alston opted not to try out his junior year.
But the elder Alston also questioned the assumptions that lie behind traditions.
“What if I was a coach and I required everybody to have dreadlocks?”
Rahkim Alston, who wears dreadlocks to be like his father, is on the football and track and field teams at Peoria High.
