Reg-Mail- Streaks over EP

This is Robb Stracks story in the Register-Mail....

The Galesburg High School girls basketball team picked up its second straight win to open the season by posting a 64-46 win over East Peoria in the Streaks annual Thanksgiving Tournament on Thursday at Thiel Gym.
The Silver Streaks jumped to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and never were threatened.
Assistant coach Andie Allison, who had to sub for head coach Evan Massey, who lost his voice early in the game, said, “Overall we played much better than we did Tuesday night. Tonight we had more composure on the offensive end and made much better decisions.”

The Streaks controlled the tempo with defensive pressure forcing numerous turnovers by the Red Raiders. Unlike Tuesday’s game against Illini West, last night the Streaks shots were dropping.
“It makes it a lot easier when the shots fall,” said Allison.
After going 6 for 34 in their opener from behind the arc, Thursday night the Silver Streaks hit 10 three’s.
“We just told the players to keep shooting and run the offense,” said Allison.
The Red Raiders weren’t afraid to run with Galesburg. but they committed too many turnovers— both forced and unforced — to enable them to keep things close.
Galesburg, holding a nine point lead at the end of the end of the first quarter, still lead by nine at intermission. By the end of the third stanza, the lead was 53-41 as Galesburg, lead by senior Jessica Lieber, held the Red Raiders off.
Lieber lead all scorers with 24 points scoring 12 in each half. The only other Silver Streak in double figures was another senior, Sharron Diggins who finished the night with 11 — all coming in the first half.
The one problem the Streaks had was the size of the Red Raiders. The length and athleticism of East Peoria found the Galesburg shooters having many of their 3- point attempts blocked early in the game.
“I thought early on we struggled a little against their size,” saId Coach Allison, “but we adjusted well and began to drive to the basket instead. That opened up the outside a little more.”
The only player in double figures for East Peoria was Kylie Giebelhausen who finished the night with 12 points.
The Silver Streaks will face Metamora tonight at 7:30 p.m in Thiel Gym in the third round of the tournament.
Sophs win 58-50
Led by Shayli Florine’s 22 points, the Galesburg sophomores topped East Peoria 58-50 on Thursday.
Galesburg led 17-13 at the quarter and 28-22 at the half.
Madison Ross scored 10 points for the winners and Macy Steck had seven.
