Summ It Up

A nice review on a must read book about Pat Summitt....

By Pat Burns of the Wisconsin State Journal-

In many ways, "Sum It Up" is a memoir that came too soon.
Last year, at age 59, legendary women's basketball coach Pat Summitt stepped away from the job she'd held since she was 22 years old because of early-onset Alzheimer's.
That makes it a memoir that came just in time. Not because of memory issues — Summitt speaks frankly about how her mind works now, and many of the interviews for this book were done in the late '90s. Instead, in a season where her voice wasn't heard as a coach, it was heard through her marvelous skill as a storyteller.
And what a story it is. "Sum It Up" succeeds because it does what a memoir should: It reflects on how its author got from point A to point B, what made them who they are today. In fact, the best parts of this book have very little to do with basketball. At its best, "Sum It Up" goes beyond being a sports memoir the way Patti Smith's "Just Kids" isn't about the rise of a punk rock star. It's about what once was, and how it all changed.

In Summitt's case, the arc is that of a Tennessee farm girl who loved sports at a time when sports offered nothing to girls and went on to build a program that became the gold standard in women's athletics. It sounds like an earnest tale, but it's one told with plenty of humor.
The early years are where this book truly shines. Summitt became famous for her toughness and a stare that could slice glass, but she was once a young woman named Patricia "Trisha" Head who became "Pat" because she didn't have the nerve at college to correct people who called her that.
She was handed the job as Tennessee's women's basketball coach while a grad student — coaching the team and teaching four classes, while also doing the team's laundry and driving its van.
From those humble beginnings rose a power, and to hear Summitt tell it is to hear history as it was being made. Yet there's also the warmth of friendships, battles with players, the desire for her father's approval, marriage and motherhood. Eventually, the book does become more about basketball (the dissolution of Tennessee's annual game with arch rival Connecticut gets more ink than the dissolution of Summitt's marriage), proving that the climb and conflict are always more interesting than sustained success.
Summitt's success is likely something that will never be matched. Sports — men's and women's — may have lost one of its icons on the sidelines, but she's there in the pages of her memoir, telling a story that even she probably finds hard to believe.
