Jess Learned made eight free throws in the fourth quarter Tuesday night, including four in the last 14 seconds, and that was enough to get Washington past Canton 50-46 in a Mid-Illini Conference game.
The Little Giants (13-4, 5-2) had tied the game at 46 on a layup by Natalie Martindale with 1:50 left.
Canton had the ball out of bounds after Learned’s free throws gave the Panthers (11-5, 5-2) a 48-46 lead but the Little Giants turned the ball over and Hayley Reneau was fouled on the play. She missed both her free throws but Learned grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.4 seconds left.
She made both free throws for the final margin.
“Jess stepped up and made the free throws and that’s what we needed,” said Washington girls basketball coach Randy Marchand.
Washington had an 14-point lead in the third quarter but Canton had a 10-point run stretching into the fourth quarter and tied it at 44 on a 3-pointer by Mel Turgeon.
“We got the big lead and, I don’t know, we just quit,” said Marchand. “They took the ball away from us a few times and they got more aggressive because they got behind. We knew they weren’t going to quit because they have a good team. That game could have gone either way.”
Learned led Washington with 16 points and nine rebounds and Reneau added 13 points.
“We kept making plays but between the transition and the second chances they got … we just didn’t play well enough,” said Canton coach Layne Langholf. “We went to a zone for the first time all year. But we hung around on the road.”
Michaela Kumer led Canton with 15 points. Cloe Churchill had eight rebounds and Kumer seven.
“We needed all of Kumer tonight because Cloe (eight points) struggled a little bit. But it was what we expected when we came over here — nobody’s going to get blown out,” Langholf said. “We battled back a couple of times. But the execution was lacking for a good portion of the game.”
