Green: Fact-finding week for Big Six girls

This week we are going to find out some things on the girls side of the Western Big Six.
The game of the night will feature Rock Island traveling to Galesburg in a battle of conference undefeated teams.
By now there is no secret with Galesburg. The Streaks will sub heavily, shoot the 3-ball and keep the pressure on. Rocky this season has laid the groundwork to follow in Galesburg’s footsteps, The Rocks send players in and out pretty liberally, but aren’t as 3-pointer happy as the Streaks. In my estimation this game will come down to which team plays the best defense in crunch time and can win the rebounding advantage. Before you think that ensures a Rocks victory, Galesburg is a better defensive team than it is given credit for. The 3-point pyrotechnics get the attention, but Evan Massey has been at this too long to discount the other end of the floor too much.
Now Quincy at Moline has some intrigue behind it. The Blue Devils have a conference losing streak of 28, but if the last two weeks have been any indication, that might be ending this season. In the first week Quincy gave United Township everything it wanted, then last Thursday the upstart Devils took Galesburg into overtime before finally running out of gas. So is this the week that Quincy gets it done? Moline only has two wins on the season, but is tough at Wharton Field House on Thursday nights. If the Maroons do fall, I would wager my money on Jordan Fletcher as the catalyst behind it. She’s six feet and can shoot from the outside and presents matchup headaches for every coach in the league.
Then we have United Township traveling to Don Morris to take on Alleman. I’m not sure what to make of the Pioneers at this point. Alleman coach Jay Hatch keeps being quoted as he likes what he sees out of his team, but what he hasn’t seen much is them winning. The Pioneers are 1-4 in their last five games. They just seem to have a hiccup somewhere along the way, usually in the second half, that has been their undoing. Figuring out whatever that is, and it may just be a lack of experience at this point, and correcting it turns Alleman into a dangerous team.
United Township has its own Jekyll and Hyde thing going on as well. They hung with Rocky last Thursday, struggled with a Geneseo team that’s a little down this year Saturday, then fell to a one-loss Limestone team after leading after three quarters Tuesday. That’s a product of being a young team partly; but make no mistake, UT coach Justin Shiltz expects consistent effort every night.
