Tai Peachey is a soph on the ONU team. Does this sound like Tai- in a game this year she had to go out with stitches to her chin area, but she went back into the game later?
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – When NCAA DIII defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan University comes to town, you’re guaranteed a fast, physical game and a lot of Titan fans. The No. 12 Olivet Nazarene University women’s basketball team was up for the challenge and came away with a 94-81 victory on Tuesday, Dec. 4 in front of several hundred Tiger and Titan fans.
“Illinois Wesleyan is such a great program. They are well coached and always physical and aggressive,” said head coach Lauren Stamatis. “I thought one of the biggest differences in the game was that our fives at the back of the press did a great job contesting and forcing them to take difficult shots. Our girls are also starting to play much better together offensively and we had a few people step up tonight that really made a difference.
One of those difference makers was junior Taylor Haymes (Wentzville, Mo.) who finished the night with a season-high 19 points, including an impressive 6-of-10 in field goal shooting and 5-of-8 behind the arch. She also added a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Another was freshmanCortney Allenbaugh (Morton, Ill.) who narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and a season-high 10 rebounds. Senior Sandy Cabadas (Aurora, Ill.), who entered the game ranked ninth in the NAIA DII in blocked shots, added another three against the Titans.
Sophomore Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich.) continues to play well, adding 15 points and eight rebounds, while senior Danielle Tolbert (Pontiac, Mich.) added 12 points. Junior Miranda Geever (Moline, Ill.) added 10 points, 10 steals and five assists to finish the night with one of the hardest double-doubles to accomplish.
Olivet (7-1, 6-1) will host the two-day Holiday Inn Express Classic starting on Friday, Dec. 7. The Tigers will face Wilberforce University (Ohio) on opening night at 7:30 p.m. They will turn around a face St. Catharine College (Ky.) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
