Journal Stars preseason look at Mid-State 4---

Mid-State 6 girls basketball at a glance
  • 1 Richwoods (27-4, 6-0): The Knights have a new coach in former all-stater Heather Cassady and two transfers — sophomore Olivia Elger from Notre Dame (first team all-conference, 16 ppg) and junior LaDaisha Steen Yates from Central (state medalist in the 100) — to go along with speedy senior Brenna Detra (first team all-conference) and senior forward Gabby Cunningham (second-team all-conference). Richwoods will play in Class 4A in postseason. “We’re much deeper than I thought we were,” Cassady said.
  • 2 Manual (11-12, 0-6): The Rams return a veteran team with seniors Deionna Williams, Marceades Davis, Danae Thomas and Kiera Stuckey expected back. Manual starts the season with back-to-back games against Notre Dame — a conference game Nov. 20 and the opening round of the Limestone Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 21.
  • 3 Notre Dame (10-18, 2-4): The Irish have been gutted by transfers — Elger is at Richwoods, Reedy is at East Peoria and junior Hannah Wallace is at Brimfield. Plus, senior Maureen Lawless elected not to play. However, veteran coach Ron Carrothers always puts a competitive team on the floor. Returning are juniors Bridget and Katie Bill, junior Matti Bielfeldt and junior Maggie Maloof, who has recovered from the foot injury which kept her off the court most of last season. The Irish have no seniors. “We had a little bit of an exodus we didn’t see coming,” Carrothers said. “But we’re real pleased with what we’ve done so far. We have to rely on each other and trust each other.”
  • 4 Central (19-10, 4-2): The Lions were devastated by graduation and Steen Yates’ departure. Their 2012-13 roster contains almost no familiar names. The team’s only senior is Shawneka Burch. “It’s a rebuilding year,” coach Meechie Edwards said. “Offensively, we have to figure out a way to put points on the board. After Christmas, we expect to get a lot better.”
