WB6 Preview- Argus

From the Argus...

The final chapter of the Western Big 6 Conference girls basketball book hasn't been written just yet.

Now is the part of the story where dreams are realized or dashed, and history is made.

Nothing will be decided for sure, but at least one team can claim part of the Big 6 championship. Galesburg and Alleman are wrapping up their league seasons, and the Streaks play at United Township. If they win, they'll clinch at least a share, their 14th, of the Big 6 crown.

Rock Island and Moline renew their rivalry, with the winner playing for at least a share of the title next week. Yes, this girls' season has come down to the wire with four teams in position to win a portion of the hardware with just two (in Galesburg's case 1) game left.

There's still a chance that four teams could share the title, but we'll worry about that later.

Four of the team in the Big 6 are ranked in their state's polls, and five teams have a chance at winning 20 or more games. It would be hard to argue that the Big 6 isn't the toughest girls conference in the state.

- Galesburg (23-4, 6-3 WB6) at United Township (18-9, 5-3):The Silver Streaks have the ball in their court. If they win, they earn at least a share of the Big 6 crown. Should Galesburg lose, it could mean they are out of title hopes all together. UT plays Moline next week, and it may not be until then that a conference champ is determined. The Panthers control their own destiny too, something that seemed impossible after starting the conference season 1-3. Since then they've run the table and are hoping they've got two more aces up their sleeves. UT will be playing without Kiana Brady, who is ineligble for academic reasons.

- Rock Island (19-6, 5-3) at Moline (17-10, 5-3): Storylines abound here, too. The Rocks were in control of the conference, but two straight losses have derailed what the Rocks hoped to be their first title in more than 20 years. Moline was pretty much written off this year after winning four straight titles, but everyone said, "Marquisha Harris graduated." Someone forgot to let the Maroons know they aren't supposed to be in the race. Now, here they are on the verge of making it five straight and creeping up on 20 wins. Shavonne Brewer will have to control the game for the Rocks and get Sarita Goldsmith into the action, while Moline will rely heavily on their do-everything senior leader Kylie Romeo.

- Alleman (16-13, 4-5) at Quincy (8-10, 0-8): The Blue Devils have to be thinking this could be a chance for them to pick up their first Big 6 win in a few years, playing the Pioneers without their leading scorer. But Alleman has other things in mind. Class 2A's No. 9 team wants to turn the ship around heading into the postseason. This will be the Pioneers last regular season game, as they'll be in the Class 2A Riverdale Regional next week, and a win would end a four-game skid. Zoe Kelso picked up the work load last week against UT, and will be counted on again to score the bulk of the points. The Pioneers will have to shut down Araiya Dade and Jordan Fletcher.

- Stat of the night: The Galesburg Silver Streaks had a perfect attendance record for practice until Tuesday night when one player was too sick to make it. With commitment like that it's no wonder they're at 20-plus wins again.
