Jane Miller in the Journal Star gives her recap of the week on Thursday mornings. Her ratings for the area this week are:
1- Morton 4-0
2- Galesburg 5-1
3- Richwoods 5-0
4- Central 4-1
5- Washington 4-1
The girls basketball season usually starts a little haphazardly.
There are pre-Thanksgiving tournaments, post-Thanksgiving tournaments and a few regular-season games thrown in for good measure.
Morton, Richwoods, Limestone, Central and Galesburg came out of their respective events as tournament champions. Morton and Limestone won their own tournaments, Richwoods repeated as Pontiac champion, though the Knights won’t be returning to that tournament.
Central won at Mount Zion and Galesburg won its tournament, which included an impressive victory over second-ranked Springfield.
Now it’s down to serious business.
Conference play in the Mid-State 6 has already started and Richwoods is strong out of the gate. The Knights don’t appear to have missed a beat despite the loss of three starters, including all-stater Mariah Smith, to graduation.
Senior point guard Maggie Cunningham looked unstoppable in a big conference win at Central on Tuesday night and the Knights have a victory over Manual as well.
And their tough early season schedule continues Thursday night with their annual meeting with Morton — always my favorite game of the year — at Morton at 7 p.m.
The Potters, who return starters Sarah Livingston, Lexi Ellis and Erin Tisdale from last year’s team, are 4-0 and had a 34-point average margin of victory in their tournament. They beat Moline 69-46 after the Maroons handed Galesburg its first loss, 62-57.
