Doug Porter- ONU

I ran across a quote from Coach Porter that applies to coaches of any style of basketball.

"There’s a huge temptation when doing anything this far “outside the box” to assume that any struggles are due to problems inherent in the system, rather than with your team’s execution or understanding or effort level.  Now, I admit freely, the System is not for everybody, and it is definitely not a cure-all.  But when we look at formula numbers and at the video, I to this day still am regularly surprised at what we discover.  It really boils down to teaching kids to execute the system principles (orb rules, knowing what to do in various  made or missed shot “situations”, 3-point shooting, unpredictable rotating defense, etc), and motivating them to play hard."
I remember when I was first starting out in coaching and we would lose, I would question everything we did. I would put in a new offense, change our defense, etc. The point that Coach Porter is making is that teams need to focus on the execution of the game plan.

For us right now, we execute defensively we are very good. We don't execute defensively we are very average. When we play hard, we are very good. When we don't play hard each possession, we become very average. Thanks for the reminder Coach Porter.
