JASON GARRETT WANTS PLAYERS THAT ARE OBSESSED WITH FOOTBALL

For the past week I have been studying Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett.  I've come to respect his aproach with his players and his attention to detail.  Clarence E Hill Jr of Cowboys Corner shares Jason Garrett's thoughts regarding his players being obsessive about football.  Here is the article:

It started with quarterback Stephen McGee talking about center Phil Costa and his tendency to be obsessive about things.

It ended with coach Jason Garrett saying he wishes he had an entire team filled with players suffering from OCD when came doing to their approach to the game.

“You said McGee said that about Costa? I think those are two peas in a pod in that regard and those are good things,” Garrett said. “We like guys who are a little obsessive about their job. They want to make sure everything is right, but at the same time, like I talked about with Stephen yesterday, sometimes things aren’t right. You have to be resourceful you have to be adaptable and flexible. I think some of that comes with experience to be honest with you. You want guys who are really locked in and focused and prepared and on top of everything, but then things don’t go right, then ok we’ll make this work too. It’s a fine line. Some guys are sometimes too flexible, too adaptable. It’s the old willow and the oak thing; you need a little oak in there too, ‘this is how we do it,’ and then also you need a little willow in there to respond to some different situations that arise. I think both of those guys, McGee and Costa, are developing the combination of those things. I think it’s helping them as players.”

Other Cowboys Garrett would characterize having a little OCD about the game are linebackers Sean Lee, Keith Brooking and DeMarcus Ware and tight end Jason Witten.

On Lee, Garrett said: “Yes, I think he’s right there with those other two guys, and that’s what we love about them. That’s what we loved about (Lee) when we drafted him last year. It’s really important to him and he wants to know all the answers and he works hard to get them. He’s going to ask every coach; he’s going to get in that (play)book; he’s going to ask the veteran players; and he’s going to be on top of everything. That’s what you want. The best players that I’ve been around have that trait to them. They have different personalities, but when it comes to their job, they have that trait and it’s a good thing.”

He said the Witten and Ware have the same kind of football trait.

“It’s great to coach (Jason) Witten and (DeMarcus) Ware,” Garrett said. “They’re great football players, but they have that same approach. They want to be great. They want to be the best. They come out everyday showing you that they want to be the best. They just don’t talk it, they show it every day. When you’re a coach and you have those guys who are your best players going about it that way, it’s easier for you to coach the other guys because you have this example of how it’s supposed to be done. We feel like the best teams in the league have those guys – the best players, the best kind of guys who work the right way and try to carry your message, and we’re fortunate we have a few of those guys on our team right now.”
