The crowds for the fourth year of the Class 3A and 4A tournament left something to be desired.
According to the Illinois High School Association, attendance for the Class 3A championship was 1,499, and 1,937 for the 4A championship in the 10,200-seat arena. The total for the entire weekend was 7,896, compared to 12,861 fans for the Class 1A and 2A weekend.
When Zion-Benton coach Tanya Johnson won the 1997 Class AA state championship with Loyola in the two-class system, the attendance was listed at 7,454 for the title game alone. (Zion-Benton, I should note, packed its section this weekend.)
It should be noted that 1997 had the state record for attendance at a girls basketball tourney. The answer- Taylorville and Galesburg.
