It seems like just yesterday that Baylie Boyer dressed for the varsity as a freshman. If my memory is accurate, in the time I have coached at GHS, Baylie is one of only ten players to never play a minute on the freshmen or soph level but be on the varsity right from the beginning of their freshmen year. The others would be- Megan Pacheco, Sarah Larson, Sarah Pacheco, Brenna Saline, Claire Anderson, Taylor Young, Kelly Ricketts, Rachel Pendry, and Jessica Howard. Baylie can sometimes be her toughest critic- she sometimes needs to be reminded of the accomplishments she has already made in girls basketball at GHS.
Socially and athletically it is a challenge.It is not easy to go from 8th grade basketball one year to varsity basketball the next year. The biggest challenge is dealing with the level of intensity from coaches on the varsity level. There is not always an opportunity in a varsity game to slowly explain what is going on and gently give the player directions. It is not unusual for a young player to lose confidence playing up on the varsity or to even feel like the coach does not like them as they hear corrections from the coaches.
Baylie has shown a toughness in her three years on the varsity. Mentally her toughness allowed us as coaches to treat her as a freshmen just like the junior and seniors on the varsity. Physically she has had a toughness dealing with multiple injuries. Fortunately she is now had about a month finally of being healthy and of getting into basketball shape. She is one of our best athletes and is one of our quickest players. With her healthy, she has been able to make our pressure defense significantly better.
Massey- When did you first start playing basketball? Describe your first experiences in basketball?
Baylie- Second grade at the YMCA then in 3rd grade I played on Junior Streaks.
Massey- Can you talk about the role your mother has had in helping you in basketball? If you have a daughter, would you want to coach her?
Baylie- She started coaching my team in 4th grade up to 6th grade and yes if I had a daughter I'd want to coach her.
Massey- As a freshmen, you were on the varsity. That can be a huge jump from junior high. What was good about being on the varsity as a freshmen? What was bad about being on the varsity as freshmen?
Baylie- It was an honor to be on the team as a freshman but it was hard to be away from all my friends.
Massey- Unfortunately, you have had some injuries in high school that have caused you to have to miss some games or sit out for awhile. How tough is that? What advice would you give to someone who is having to deal with an injury and sit out?
Baylie- It was hard watching the team play without me but I just had to keep my head up and realize that it'll just take time for it to heal and will eventually get a lot better.
Massey- You have good quickness. Have you always been a guard growing up in basketball? If you did not play point guard, what would you like to play?
Baylie- Yes I've always been the point guard if I wasn’t I would probably want to be a 2 guard.
Massey- What has been your favorite class in high school?
Baylie- Health and PE
Massey- Before high school, who was your favorite teacher?
Baylie- Mrs. Riley
Massey- Do you have any idea what you want to do after high school? (in terms of school or even a career)
Baylie- Possibly play basketball at a junior college. Then transfer to Western and become a PE teacher.
Massey- If you could visit anywhere, where would you want to go?
Baylie- Paris
Massey- Of all the things we have done in the summer with basketball, what is one of your favorite memories?
Baylie- I enjoyed going to North Carolina my freshman year
Massey- In high school, what is one game you have played that you want to make sure you keep the DVD to show people when you are 70 years old? Why?
Baylie- The first game I played because it was the first game I played on varsity as a freshman.
