Richwoods Wraps Up Conf

This time, Richwoods was the team which got off to a quick start in its Mid-State 6 Conference game with Notre Dame.
And the Knights needed all of those early points Tuesday night in a 57-46 win which clinched the conference title.
“We definitely needed a good start. After the last game against Notre Dame, our girls were kind of ready … it had been couple of months since we played them so we wanted to get up and get on them early,” said Richwoods coach Heather Cassady of the 62-58 upset loss to the Irish on Dec. 11.
It was Richwoods’ first loss of the season.
Richwoods (21-5, 5-1) opened the game in man-to-man rather than its usual match-up zone, which flustered the Irish (9-17, 3-2). The Knights led 18-4 in the first quarter before Maggie Maloof ended the period with a 3-pointer for ND.

“The first game, we came out in zone and surprised them,” said Notre Dame coach Ron Carrothers. “And today they came out in man and we expected zone and it kind of threw us for a loop and, flat out, we panicked, especially in the first quarter, and it took us until halftime to get our bearings back.”
Notre Dame trailed 41-19 with 4:44 left in the third quarter, but then things began to turn. The Irish finished the quarter outscoring Richwoods 6-1, then went on a 13-8 push with Matti Bielfeldt scoring six points in that span. She finished with 24 with 18 of those scored in the second half.
The Irish cut the lead to six points with 51 seconds left but were forced to foul and the Knights made 5 of 8 free throws the rest of the way.
“When we got our bearings back and got focused, good things happened,” said Carrothers. “But if you’re down 19 at halftime, it’s a hill you aren’t going to climb. There were just too many mental mistakes that happened, but that’s part of the game.
“But I’m very proud the kids regrouped and pulled together as a team. And anytime you come back that far on Richwoods, you have been playing good basketball.”
Olivia Elger led Richwoods with 21 points — she had 17 in the first half — Gabby Cunningham added 15 and Brenna Detra 13.
Detra also had 11 rebounds and four steals while Cunningham had nine rebounds.
Bielfeldt had nine of ND’s 31 rebounds.
Richwoods is finished with its conference schedule and defended its M-S 6 title.
“It’s nice. The girls are happy,” said Cassady. “And it’s always good to beat a rival. It was a good game.”
