Regional seedings and pairings were decided on last week and it won’t be long before we find out if the voters were correct in their choices.
The most competitive regional in the Washington Sectional looks to be the one at Bloomington Central Catholic.
Morton (22-4), which is on a 10-game winning streak, earned the No. 1 seed over the hosts, even though BCC (20-3) is ranked fifth in the Class 3A state poll and the Potters are sixth.
No. 3 seed Normal U-High, which beat Richwoods last week, also is receiving votes in the state poll.
Washington, with a 15-7 record, is seeded fourth. Bloomington and Metamora round out the field.
This regional opens on Feb. 11 with Washington vs. Bloomington at 6 p.m. and U-High vs. Metamora at 7:30. Semifinals are Feb. 12 at 6 and 7:30 p.m. and the finals are Feb. 14 at 7:30.
I hope none of you parents or fans have big Valentine’s Day plans.
Galesburg (17-10) is the top seed at Dunlap, followed by Rock Island Alleman, Dunlap, Geneseo and Illinois Valley Central.
Dunlap appears to be hitting its stride — the Eagles’ 44-32 win over Canton last week is proof of that — and could be a factor. Galesburg beat Alleman 73-65 on Jan. 3 and plays the Pioneers again on Feb. 7.
This regional has a play-in game between Geneseo and IVC on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. with semifinals Feb. 12 at 6 and 7:30 and the finals on Feb. 14 at 7:30.
Canton took the top spot at the East Peoria Regional, followed by Limestone, Manual, East Peoria, Notre Dame and Central.
The big wild card here is Notre Dame, which beat Rock Island (ranked sixth in Class 4A) last week and had an impressive comeback Tuesday night against Richwoods. The Irish are an extremely dangerous No. 5 seed.
Opening night on Feb. 11 features the Irish vs. EP at 6 p.m. and a Mid-State 6 rematch — Manual vs. Central, at 7:30. Semifinals are Feb. 12 and finals Feb. 14 at the same times as the rest of the regionals.
Ottawa is the top seed at Fairbury, with Prairie Central, Pontiac, LaSalle-Peru and Streator making up the rest of the field.
All move on to the Washington Sectional, where the East Peoria winner meets the Dunlap winner at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and the Ottawa winner meets the BCC winner at 7:30 Feb. 19. The finals are at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21.
The supersectional is at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at Pontiac against the Peotone Sectional winner. Likely candidates for that spot are Joliet Catholic and perennial qualifier Country Club Hills Hillcrest
