Richwoods got off to a slow start against Manual on Tuesday night, but the Knights finished strong for a 48-27 Mid-State 6 Conference girls basketball win.
The host Knights (6-0, 1-0) led 6-1 midway through the first quarter but Olivia Elger hit a 3-pointer with 1:35 to go in the period to help Richwoods take a 12-3 lead after eight minutes.
“Both teams were kind of just going through the motions,” said Richwoods coach Heather Cassady of the start of the game. “And I was trying to get them going by yelling at them, and that wasn’t working, or get them going by turning up the defense a little bit, but I think it just took a quarter to get back in the groove.”
But the Knights scored 18 points in the third quarter, after leading 20-13 at the half.
“In the second half, we went to a little bit of a press and that picked the tempo up a little bit and caused some chaos,” said Cassady.
Brenna Detra led the Knights with 12 points and six rebounds. Elger added 11 points.
Deionna Williams and Danae Thomas each had six points for Manual and Marceades Davis had five rebounds.
“We didn’t shoot good for both halves (11 for 40 for the game),” said Manual coach Ken Banks. “And when we don’t make our shots, we tend to get a little sluggish. In the first half, defensively we did a lot of things we wanted to do but then we missed our assignments in the second half. Elger got loose on a couple of baskets down the middle — I thought we did a good job of preventing that in the first half — but she’s a great player and they have a good system. But we’re going to get better.”
LIMESTONE 45, DUNLAP 38: The Rockets outscored the host Eagles in each of the four quarters for the Mid-Illini Conference victory.
Limestone (3-1, 1-0) got 19 points from senior center Morgan Schwindenhammer, who had five field goals and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Junior guard McKenna Weaver added 13 points for the Rockets.
Sophomore forward Brianna Henson scored a team-high 11 points for Dunlap (4-2, 0-1), but fouled out late in the game. Junior forward Liz Zoz finished with eight points, and junior guard Michelle Anderson scored seven for the Eagles.
NORMAL WEST 54, PEKIN 22: It was a tough night on the road for the Dragons who, despite having seven players score, didn’t have one with more than six points in the nonconference loss.
Normal West jumped out to a 19-3 lead after one quarter, and held a 29-12 advantage going into halftime.
Sophomore Jesse Ulrich led Pekin (2-3) with six points, while Katie Powell and Sam Schultz each added four points.
METAMORA 37, BLOOMINGTON 33: Senior Kyler Samp had a game-high 13 points and the visiting Redbirds held off a second-half comback for the non-conference victory.
Metamora (2-4) led 23-15 at halftime, but Bloomington chipped the lead to two at the end of the third quarter, before the Redbirds closed with a 10-8 advantage in the fourth.
Senior Cassidy Ioerger added 11 points for Metamora.
DIXON 41, ILLINOIS VALLEY CENTRAL 30: Casey Dillow scored a game-high 13 points as visiting Dixon got the nonconference victory.
IVC (0-4) led by one at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 14-7 in the second.
Junior center Hallie Shirley led the Grey Ghosts with 11 points, while junior forward Candis Rudolph scored seven, and sophomore guard Erica Larson added six points.
