The stakes won’t be as high as they were last February, but there will still be plenty to play for Saturday when Richwoods and the hosts square off at the Morton Thanksgiving girls basketball tournament.
Winners of their two first games Friday at the five-team round robin, the two 2012 Class 3A sectional finalists will look to claim at least a share of the title when they tip off at 11:45 a.m. on the Potters’ home court.
The Potters, who defeated the Knights to win the 2012 Class 3A Galesburg Sectional, kept their title hopes intact with victories over Normal Community (63-25) and Batavia (65-63).
After using a game-high 21 points from Chandler Ryan to roll past the Ironmen in their opener, the Potters (2-1) had a tougher time getting past the Bulldogs.Despite storming out to a 23-10 lead after a quarter, Morton found itself down seven to Batavia midway through the fourth.
The Potters cut it to 63-62 with 22 seconds to play, opening the door for Emma Heisler to deliver the victory with a game-winning 3-pointer with 7.2 seconds remaining.
“That wasn’t an easy shot,” Morton coach Bob Becker said of Heisler’s game-winner. “It says a lot about her confidence to take the shot in that situation.”
Richwoods had a somewhat easier time in its two victories against Moline (58-35) and Batavia (60-46).
Olivia Elger scored a combined 30 points for the Knights (3-0), who led after every quarter.
Brenna Detra chipped in 13 for Richwoods against Moline, while Gabby Cunningham’s 18 against Batavia helped the Knights to the double-digit victory.
