Started His Own Gale Scholar Program

Memorial Day is a time for all of us to reflect. My understanding is Memorial Day started as "Decoration Day" sometime after the Civil War to honor soldiers who had died. Sometime in the early 1900's it became tradition to "decorate" and remember not just fallen soldiers but to reflect on all of our ancestors. This past Memorial Day, I had a chance to do just that.

My namesake was my grandfather on my mother's side, Herbert Winfield Evans. My grandmother was always critical of the "s" being dropped so my name was Evan. But my mother and father chose "Evan" to honor my grandfather. Like most of us as we reflect on family, I tend to see my grandfather as near perfect. He was a quiet, kind man. He never drank alcohol, I never heard him raise his voice or swear. His one vice was he loved Swisher Sweets. While my grandmother hated the smell, I enjoyed the smell when growing up.

"Grandpa Bert" grew up in rural Victoria. He had the misfortune to have his father die when Bert was only 12 years old. This was well before the New Deal and Social Security. His mother was left with no income and with younger children to care for. The solution was to send 12 year old Bert to work as a hired hand on farm. So he with given a chest to put all his belongings in, and shipped off to start his career as a laborer. I cannot imagine how a 12 year old must have felt to not only lose your father but in effect lose your family in a matter of weeks. He never graduated from high school.

He eventually married Margaret Kenney and they moved to the big city of Galesburg. Bert found a variety of jobs, but for most of his adult life he drove a street car in Galesburg. His route was from Lake Storey to downtown then out East Main to Gale Lake. The Evans with daughter Marjorie rented and lived in a couple houses on East Main St. This was convenient because the streetcar could make an unscheduled stop at East Main to have lunch delivered by mother and daughter, and for daughter to jump on and ride a "lap" with father. But the real perk of living on East Main was Grandpa Bert could pick up a block of ice on the west side, and drop it off with Margaret when he went by. The refrigerator was set then to keep the food cold.

East Main must have been quite a neighborhood. My mother grew up with two Galesburg icons in her neighborhood. Carl Sandburg was older and "Little Jack" Larson was younger. My mother was friends with Sandburgs in the neighborhood. Grandma Evans never cared for Carl, he was "too liberal." My mother agreed with his politics and thought he was wonderful. In fact, as an English teacher years later in Savanna, she made sure they studied Carl Sandburg's works and gave pennies for his birthday. Grandma Evans best friend was Jack Larson's mother.

As time went on, Grandpa Bert eventually drove buses after the street cars stopped. And then he quit driving and worked as a custodian at Knox College. They never were able to afford to buy their own home. They wanted to buy the house on the corner of Losey and Hawkins, but came up short. In an era of different gender beliefs, Margaret's father loaned money to his sons for homes but felt it was the job of the man's family to help his daughter with finances. Thus no home.

They did not live in poverty, but lived a simple life. But one thing they did not cut corners on was their daughter Marjorie. They made sure she was able to get involved in speech and drama clubs a youngster. And they made sure she was able to be the families first college graduate. She graduated from Knox College in 1934. I cannot imagine the thrill and pride Grandpa Bert must have felt as a man without a high school diploma who was a custodian at Knox to have his daughter graduate from Knox.

Ironically, in 1964 my father died when I too was 12 years old. I don't know why, but I can still picture my grandpa and grandma coming up the sidewalk of our home in Savanna the morning my father died. I don't remember what was said. Years later, my mother said when he arrived my grandfather hugged her and said, "Thank God, Evan & Mark won't have to leave." How sad, he still must have been effected some 70 years later by what had happened to him.

Grandpa Bert left a legacy for his family. His legacy was he made sure his daughter received the education he had never gotten. And with that education, she and her family gained economic stability. I guess in a small way, Grandpa Bert is just one of many stories of the American Dream.

Every family has stories like my grandfather. It is important we remember these stories. They are stories of people who were unselfish, worked hard, and just wanted to create a better life for their children and their children's children.
