Congratulations 1997 Streaks Team

The 1996-7 Streaks basketball team will be inducted into the GHS Hall of Fame next fall. The Streaks finished the regular season a perfect 28-0 in the regular season. They capped the undefeated regular season off with a 53-46 win over Rocky at Rock Island in the last regular season game. The Streaks finished the regular season ranked #1 in the State of Illinois

They were undefeated WB6 Champs, champions of the Galesburg Thanksgiving Tourney, and champions of the Harlem Christmas Tourney.

The Streaks won the Regional Championship with a 110-30 win over LaSalle-Peru. The most exciting part of that night was the birth of Allen Massey.


In the Sectional at Moline, Galesburg defeated Freeport 56-42, and then beat Rock Island in the championship 71-58. The championship game had extra excitement to it. The bus to take the Streaks to Moline never showed up. So the team scrambled to get to Moline by taking coaches vehicles.

In the Supersectional at Dekalb HS, the Streaks defeated Belvidere 76-56. At State, the Streaks opened up the Elite 8 with a win over Homewood-Flossmor 66-42.

Galesburg lost to Taylorville in the semi-finals 67-61. This was the Streaks first loss of the season. This game set the all-time state record for attendance at a girls state game. It remains the record today. Galesburg went on to lose in the third place game to Chicago Marshall.

The Streaks were led in scoring by Molly Watson (Sr) with 19.0ppg. She went on to play for DePaul University. The other starters were Angie Galyean (Sr)  6.7ppg, Melanie Pendergrass (Jr) 11.0ppg, Jessica Thompson (Sr) 7.7ppg, and Sarah Larson (Soph) 9.7ppg. First off the bench were Megan Pacheco (Frosh) 6.5ppg and Meg Sherwood (Sr) 3.5ppg. Also on the team were Jaque Howard (Frosh), Michelle Flaar (Frosh), Leslie Gumm (Junior), Danielle Murfin (Junior), Whitney Snyder (Frosh), Jenny Zolper (Soph), and Katie McCants (Soph).

The seniors on this squad had a record over their three years on the varsity of 91-11.

The sophomores Jenny Zolper and Sarah Larson were on the varsity all four years of their career.  Their teams went 122-16 and finished 3rd in State, 4th in State, Elite 8, and 2nd in State.

The freshmen on this team finished with a four year record of 127-14. Their teams finished 4th in State, Elite 8, 2nd in State, 4th in State.

The freshmen and sophomores on this team had the distinction of always playing the last game of their seasons at Redbird Arena.
