Springfield With Sectional Win

A big game by senior star Zahna Medley and huge defensive night by Springfield High School resulted in a 72-53 win over Champaign Centennial in the semifinals of the Class 3A Taylorville Sectional girls basketball tournament.
Medley scored a career-high 37 points, one more than her previous record.
The Senators’ victory set up an all-Central State Eight Conference title game Thursday at Taylorville High School. Springfield (27-4) and Chatham Glenwood (18-12) will meet for the championship at 7:30 p.m.
Springfield, the top-ranked Class 3A team in the state, got off to a slow start against No. 10 Centennial. The Chargers took an 11-4 lead four minutes into the first quarter. The Senators’ 9-0 run gave them a 13-11 edge early in the second period.
“They came out the aggressor right at the beginning,’’ Springfield coach Brad Scheffler said. “We had to match that and we did right after the first four minutes. They made the run early, but overall it took its toll as the game went on.’’
The Senators have been known to press teams into countless turnovers. It was no different against Centennial. Applying full-court pressure was the turning point in the opening half, and Springfield kept it going through the fourth quarter.
Centennial committed 15 of its 25 turnovers before halftime.
Behind its defense and an 11-0 run, Springfield pulled away for a 24-13 advantage, which grew to a 36-24 halftime lead.
“This is the fastest team I’ve ever been on in the past four years and we’re using it to our advantage,’’ Medley said. “Fortunately, turnovers are turning into points for us.
“My dad always tells me ‘Defense wins games and championships. That’s what is proven to us now. Our defense is helping us win, helping us score and get our points.  That’s how we’re winning.’’
Centennial coach Susan Thomas praised the Senators’ defensive effort.
“They were fantastic,’’ said Thomas, who watched SHS end Centennial’s season for the second straight year. “They gave good pressure and good traps. We were a little surprised we didn’t get to the free throw line all game, especially with the pressure they were giving, but I guess that happens.’’
The Chargers, who were led by Katelynn Martinez’s 19 points, made both of their two free-throw attempts. The Senators converted 18 of their 19 free throws. Medley was a perfect 14-for-14 on foul shots.
Springfield now turns its attention to Glenwood. During the regular season, the Senators swept Glenwood in a pair of CS8 games.
