Springfield Makes 4th Elite 8 Trip

Springfield is making their fourth straight Elite 8 trip. They start 2 seniors and one soph. And the first three off the bench are a freshmen, and two sophs. Sounds like they will be back for #5.

This is from Springfield paper....

For those who pay attention to the Springfield High School girls basketball team from afar, it can appear to be just the Zahna Medley Show.
All-stater Medley, a two-time Central State Eight Conference Player of the Year bound for Texas Christian University next fall, certainly is the focal point of opposing defenses.
But Medley’s supporting cast is making a name for itself as well, especially starters Kelsey Hulcher, Meghan Fetter, Ashton Williams and Anika Webster.
Hulcher, the only other senior on the team, and Williams, a junior, join Medley in the backcourt. Fetter, a junior, and Webster, a sophomore, try to make life hard for opponents in the post.
Being the youngest starter, Webster said she just tried to fit in quickly.
“Everybody has certain roles and I try to do the best I can do to help my team out,” she said. “We all have specific roles to help our team. I just tried to get as much as I could from all the players. They have a lot more experience than I have, so I try to learn all I can from them.”
Reinforcements
During a four-year run of elite performances from the Senators, there inevitably has been the need to reload and replace players who contributed to such a successful era.
SHS lost Kasi Korza and Amber Cason from last year’s Class 3A third-place team. They represented two post players with a barrelful of experience.
Springfield coach Brad Scheffler knew what he had with his guards. Eventually, he was just as confident in his new post players as well.
“As the year’s gone on, they’ve played against really good posts and they’ve gotten a lot better,” Scheffler said. “That’s why we schedule the games that we do so they can get better and more prepared for this time of year.”
The Senators (28-4) will face Salem (29-4) at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Springfield Supersectional at The Recreation and Athletic Center on the UIS campus with a berth to the Class 3A state tournament on the line.
Springfield has been in the Final Four each of the past three seasons, and the Senators have a fourth-place finish and two thirds. Part of the reason for the Senators’ success is a versatile roster that allows Scheffler to mix and match players.

Versatility
Bench players Courtney Pence, a freshman, and sophomores Mel Bremhorst and Julia Rosen give Scheffler the ability to play three posts at once or four guards.
