My first experiences were coaching cross country vs. Richwoods. Their coach was a coaching legend, Ty Franklin. He was a no nonsense guy with about six boys in the program, and they all could beat our top runner that year. I don't think he talked to me, I was 22 and he probably thought I was one of the runners.
My first basketball experience was as a boys assistant in 1974-5. We lost the Regional championship game at Richwoods by a score of something like 105-55. And it was not that close. It was a demoralizing loss because our best players were sophs and juniors but so were their's.
As an assistant for Coach Owens, you spent a lot of time on the road scouting. Don Wright and I probably saw only about half the Streaks games. I think Mike Owens saw Richwoods play about anytime we were not playing, and then Don and I went the other times. Mike was a great scout. He would send us with directions just to watch for one or two things. I remember once, he told me just to chart every time Mark Smith got the ball. Where did he get it? Exactly what did he do with it? And the big deal was- off the dribble did he jump to pass?
Richwoods entered the Regional at Galesburg #1 in Illinois. Galesburg pulled of the huge upset. Many Galesburg people say it was the greatest high school game played at Thiel Gym. I don't know, I never saw it. Don Wright and I were scouting at Manual. We stopped on the bridge by Brimfield to catch the end of the game on WGIL. To this day I have never seen the game. But I do have the original copy of the VHS tape- but it 2 inches thick.
My next basketball experiences were vs. the great girls basketball teams of Mary Kay Hungate and Ralph Gallo. They were the most organized and most disciplined basketball teams I have ever seen. They simply did not beat themselves. Mary Kay was way ahead of her time. She only kept 10 players on the roster and you had to earn it. She used to bring the team up to work as counselors at the Knox Buck's Camps. She had them out running on the track in the morning, shooting at noon, and scrimmaging late into the night. I remember her once telling me a 6' returning post player probably wouldn't get to play the next year. The reason was the girl had not worked hard enough on her ft's she felt. She was only a 60% ft shooter. It turns out the girl did start, was all-state, and by season was shooting 75%. Motivation.
After Hungate quit at Richwoods, I was fortunate to draw on her GHS roots and got her to come up and spend a day talking with my team in summer camp, and picking her brain. I have no idea how many ideas she gave us, but it had a huge impact on our program.
Ralph has been involved in the girls basketball program forever. He is one of those guys who make high school sports program work. He seems to be willing and able to do whatever Richwoods needs. He has the low ego to work with dozens of head coaches, and has the respect of his rivals.
Coach Snarr was a coach who came over from the boys side to the girls side in the 1990's. Snarr was and is old school. His teams didn't mess around with a lot of gimmicks, they just played basketball. He was a coach who had a story the moment you walked into the door.
My longest experiences were in coaching cross country vs. teams coached by veteran Bob LaCroix. He could be considered one of the greatest coaches in Richwoods or Illinois history. When he was first at Central and then at Richwoods, he would regularly have 75-100 males and females on his cross country teams. He had the rare ability to involve lots of kids but at the same time develop an elite team which would compete for spots at state. Talking to Bob at a cross country meet was like a coaching clinic.
A lot of memories having teams compete vs. some of the Richwoods coaching legends.
