Geneseo- Our Next Opponent

By Dan Tomlin, dtomlin@qconline.com
OTTAWA — To win the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference title, the Geneseo girls' basketball team had to get defensive.

Playing on the road in Ottawa, the Leafs brought their A-game, and turned up the D, winning 46-35 at Kingman Gym on Wednesday.

Jumping out to an early lead, Geneseo held Ottawa without a basket for the entire second quarter and more than half of the third. All told, 12 minutes, 55 seconds went by between Pirate buckets.

At the half, the stats were ugly for Ottawa: 3-for-16 from the field, nine points and 10 turnovers.

Geneseo (23-4, 8-1) continued to pour it on behind a game-high 13 points from Devan Griffin, who played through the flu. She missed school on Tuesday but wasn't going to miss having a shot at a conference crown.

"I was really fatigued and tired (Tuesday), but I knew I had to get ready for Ottawa," Griffin said. "After they beat us on our court, we had to give it back to them."

It looked a lot like the previous game the two teams played as Geneseo had a comfortable, double-digit lead trimmed down to seven, but unlike last time, they responded with big baskets.

Leading by just eight and having no momentum, Kelsey Nystrom drained a 3-pointer to give the Leafs some breathing room.

"I got kind of chewed out about that," Nystrom joked after the game, "but it was a big shot for us and really brought us together."

The senior guard ended with a dozen points, and forward Kaci Storm scored 8 but had contributions that weren't in her stat line but showed up in the emptiness of Division I signee Kelcie Rombach's stats.

Storm held Rombach to just 2-of-11 shooting and five points before the senior center fouled out with two minutes to play. The only girl to get anything going for the Pirates was Allie Miceli, who had a double-double, scoring 13 and pulling down 11 rebounds. On the night, Ottawa shot less than 30 percent from the field.

"It's a challenge to play her, and if we want to win you have to accept those challenges," Storm said. "It was really a team effort though, and it always has been. That's what we preach."

It's strange to think of man-to-man defense as a team effort, but Geneseo head coach Scott Hardison agrees with Storm.

"When you play good man-to-man defense, it is a team effort because you're always talking and switching and playing together," Hardison said. "I'm very happy with how we played tonight. Last time, they made a run and we stopped being who we are. Tonight, we weathered the storm.

"They threw punches, and this time we stood up and were ready to finish the job."

The Leafs clinched a share of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference's West Division title and can win it outright tonight with a win over Dixon. The Pirates travel to Streator and are rooting for the Duchesses to knock off the Maple Leafs to tie for the NIB-12w title.

It's the first time the Leafs have won the crown since 2007-2008 when Kara Russell and Alli Rivera were donning green and white.

"We're pleased to get at least a share of it for now," Hardison said. "Your whole life, you're taught to share, but (tonight) we're going to be selfish. We don't want to share the title with anyone."
