Here come the Panthers.

Dubbed as the favorites to win the Western Big 6 Conference girls basketball title before the season started, the red-hot United Township team took another big step in the right direction Thursday night, beating Rock Island, 42-32, to ensure the last three weeks of the season will be mighty interesting.

United Township played their best defensive game of the season, and their timing couldn't have been better.

The credit for the defensive gem goes directly to two Panthers, Abby VanDeventer and Autumn Vergeyle. A guard, VanDeventer shut down this week's Pacesetter, Shavonne Brewer, holding her to 2-for-15 shooting and scoreless until the fourth quarter, when she scored five. Vergeyle had the unenviable task of going up against Sarita Goldsmith, and the tall redhead did her best, holding Goldsmith to 10 points.

Vergeyle had a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with 9 points. MiKayla Fallon led all scorers with 15 points for the Panthers, while Goldsmith had the team-high for the Rocks.

"It was tough, but we knew what we had to do," said the senior center Vergeyle. "This was the last time we were ever going to play Rock Island and we really wanted to beat them. I knew Sarita is big and strong, but they were getting really frustrated. That's what we wanted to have happen. We needed them to get frustrated and confused."

The Rocks looked downright lost in the third quarter. Leading 13-11 at halftime, the Rocks came out and couldn't find the basket. United Township went on a 14-1 run to start the half, and Goldsmith made the only Rocky bucket with just 12 seconds to go in the frame.

That set the tone for a physical fourth quarter, when the Rocks committed seven fouls, many of which were hotly contested. Late in the game, fans from both sides showed displeasure in the officials. In the first half, just two fouls were called in a very physical game. In the second half, that many were whistled in the first 30 seconds. In all, 25 fouls were whistled in the second half, including a technical on Rocky coach Thad Hoover.

Things really boiled over when two referees blew their whistles -- one calling a travel, the other calling a jump ball, with the Panthers getting the benefit of the jump ball.

"I've been in this conference long enough to know that you've got referees from all over the Quad-Cities and you're getting a different game every night," said Hoover. "We work our tails off to prepare and then you just don't know what you're going to get."

UT coach Justin Shiltz could commiserate with his colleague, citing a lack of control on the court which led to several elbows and generally rough play that led to Fallon getting a fat lip in the closing seconds with the Rocks scrambling to get back in the game.

In the fourth, the Rocks matched their scoring output for the first three quarters combined, but UT matched that intensity by continuing to score. Fallon and fellow guard Kiana Brady dished out three assists each, finding holes in the Rocks' zone and the dashing Panthers elected to give rather than shoot.

"We made a point of that, to get the next pass," Shiltz said. "They did a great job of finding the open girl and that's what can happen against a zone like that."

The Rocks shot just 26-percent through the first three quarters, while the Panthers took control of the game.

"We didn't play well enough to win," Hoover said. "We didn't have a good night."

Left for dead at 2-3 (in Big 6 play), the Panthers have knocked off Moline (4-3) and Rock Island (5-2) and now the Rocks have the pressure squarely on their shoulders. With road trips to Galesburg and Moline staring them down the next two weeks to win the Big 6 title.

The Panthers, on the other hand, are turning into the team many thought they could be heading into the season with so many veterans playing.

"If we play like we did tonight, I think we can go up against any team," Vergeyle said.
