A Ref Really Said It To Me

I honestly think we have had good ref crews in each of our games since Christmas, starting at Alleman last week and going thru IVC. Obviously as a coach and as a fan, you don't always agree with individual calls but the important thing is whether they call the game consistently.

What does consistency in officiating mean? It means obviously that they make the same calls no matter at which end of the floor the play is at, and regardless of which team is on offense or defense. But there is also a need to be consistent in how the game is called regardless of whether it is in the first minute or last minute, whether the game is tied or a 30 point game. It is very frustrating for a reserves to get into a blow out game and the refs decide not to call anything anymore.

I especially appreciated the ref crew we had at IVC. They hustled throughout the game. When there was a deadball, they got it back in play quickly. When there was a foul, the jogged to report, got the players lined up and administered the shots. It is great when you have a crew that keeps the game moving. Hats off.

But one of the refs at IVC stopped in front of our bench during a ft to ask me a question. You won't guess what he asked.

During the ft, he said,"Coach, are you a big hockey fan?" Obviously he was making reference to all the subbing. After he asked, he just smiled. It was perceptive on his part. And originally when Coach Arseneault developed his "system" concepts, he did use the hockey subbing model. The logic is that you don't want players "pacing" themselves, to make the pressing and running style work, you need to have the players going at 90-95% of the max speed. And it might be that if they play 4-5 minute shifts, they may have to pace themselves and go at 75-85% speed. That little extra can make a difference. But that is the toughest thing to get system players to do-- go at that extra level.

Here is an essay that goes into greater detailing of explaining the logic of subbing every 35 seconds.
