At Sterling....

STERLING – Most of the time, losing five straight games is not something to feel real good about.
The Sterling Golden Warriors girls basketball team did just that at the Sterling Shootout, which started last weekend and concluded Thursday with a pair losses at Musgrove Fieldhouse.
Yet, there were plenty positives to take from the experience against the rugged field of opponents.
“I think we learned a lot of lessons here that we will be able to take with us the rest of the season,” Sterling senior Ashli King said. “The younger girls on the team got more playing time and the whole team realized that we can’t play in spurts. We have to go hard the whole time against good teams like this.”
Sterling’s play in the tournament wrapped up with a 55-23 loss to Montini, the defending Class 3A state champions.
The Broncos built an 11-2 lead in the first quarter before Sterling made its best run of the game. The Warriors closed out the quarter on a 5-0 run thanks to a bucket by Aleena Hammelman and a 3-pointer from Stephanie Kester.
The rest of the way, Montini’s size and speed proved to be too much. The Broncos outscored Sterling (7-7) 12-3 in the second quarter to permanently pull ahead.
“Montini and Hononegah are the two best teams that we played here,” Hammelman said. “They just have a roster filled with amazing athletes. I am really happy with the way we competed. I think we felt like we could have done better, but now we know what we have to do against teams like this.”
Hammelman scored a team-high 10 points. Kester added six.
The loss to Montini was the most lopsided of the tournament for the Warriors. After dropping the opener by 24 points to Rockford Lutheran last Friday, the Warriors were within 10 points in their other three games, including a 52-41 loss to Moline on Thursday morning.
“We were able to play with most of the teams here,” King said. “We thought we could have done some things a few of the games that would have put us in better position at the end to get a win, but we still competed hard.”
