Charleston Paper's Wednesday Recaps

By Kyle Daubs
It might have snowed the other night, but the duo of Megan O'Dell and Courtney Carver made it rain.
O'Dell would made six three points to go along with her game-high 26 points, and Carver's double-double of 15 points 12 rebounds led the Charleston Lady Trojans to a 62-37 win over the Rantoul Lady Eagles in the first round of the Charleston Holiday Tournament.
"One of the keys were we were knocking down perimter shots," said coach Jeff Miller."(Courtney) Carver had outstanding ball game for us with her double double."

As the Lady Trojans struggled to just get a shot off, O'Dell took matters into her own hands by pulling up for two consecutive 3-point shots and would make CHS history with 3:57 left in the first quarter with her second trey, passing Rhonda Ritz to break the top ten in CHS career point leaders.
Everyone might have not been thinking that as O'Dell would not only hit the three, but would hit it while being fouled and hitting the free throw for the old fashioned four point play to give the Lady Trojans the 9-4 lead.
Rantoul's Hannah Wascher would respond by scoring four straight points to cut the lead down to one.
O'Dell remained hot and would nail another 3-point shot as well as a basket under the rim after being set up by McClain Miller. O'Dell would return the favor in setting up Millers jump shot and the Lady Trojans saw themselves on a 8-0 run.
Again Wascher would lead a stretch of six straight points, but the Charleston forwards weren't going to let this lead slip away.
Picking up her four offensive rebound of the game Carver would fake Kalista Lutes off the shot, and put up the jumper to put the lead back to ten. Mary Jackson would get it on the action after a slow shooting night by banking in her first basket.
With Jackson and Junelle Ronk both picking up their third fouls Miller had todug into his bench for the first half receiving quality minutes from the Millers' on the team in McClain and Rachel Miller who supply grab five rebounds a piece.
Miller said, "I Thought our bench did a great job They came in and lifted us. That's part of their job to give us that quick lift."
After an offensive putback by Wascher, the junior forward would pull up a 3-point shot and get fouled by Courtney Gossett, and after making two of the three free throws the lead was cut down to eight.
Once again it was O'Dell to stop the momentum.
Moments later, Gossett would make up for the foul by setting up O'Dell on the wing for her fifth trey of the night, and all was well in Baker Gym as the Lady Trojans snapped their eight game losing streak winning for the first time in exactly one month.
Wascher led Rantoul with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Cargo added 12 points, but the Trojans were too much to handle.
"(Hannah) Wascher really hurt us in that second quarter, but we were able to make some adjustments at halftime. Overally I think this might have been the best we have shot the ball in a long time. It was a good all around effort,"said Miller.

Charleston Holiday Tournament Roundup
By Kyle Daubs
There was plenty of scoring in day one of the Charleston Holiday Tournament. There were sophomore making big shots, plenty of three's, and a team that nearly finished the game with more turnovers than points.
All in all here's the breakdown of day one.
Effingham 'Robs' Tigers
Being six foot can have its perks.
Effingham's 6'0 sophomore center, Stephanie Robb, could tell you all about that. By the time the first quarter was halfway over, Robb all ready had four offensive rebounds.
With the team snagging five offensive rebounds in their first possession, Madeline Totten finally was able to make the uncontested basket. The Tigers only needed one shot to score their first points with Kanetra Towns making the layup.
Robb continued to use her height and athleticism to make Urbana pay down low. Robb would score the next ten Effingham points to lead a 19-2 run to finish the quarter with Josie Zerrusen adding five points and three assists off the bench.
The defense would hold the Tigers to two second quarter points while it would by Effingham's Kelly Utz and Caitlin Kaufman teamed up for 13 points.
Jesisca Mack and Karidia Shelby each would score the first points of the second half, but baskets by Caitlin Kauffman and Utz would continue another Effingham run.
In the end the rebounding numbers were what popped eyes open with the Hearts out rebounding the Tigers 27-11, and the turnover ratio ended with Effingham only committing eight turnovers while the Tigers faulted 18 times.
"We talked about before the game that we needed to keep us in front of them," said Effingham coach Jeff Shafer. "I kids did a nice job on that, and our press. There's not much negative you can say about that first half."
Robb finished the game with a game high 14 points on a 7-9 shooting afternoon with eight rebounds led the way with Utz adding nine points. The Effingham bench added 20 points with Zerrusen, Jane Michael, and Abby Reed all scoring five points off the bench.
Effingham next plays at 9:00 a.m. versus Decatur Eisenhower while Urbana follows after against Galesburg.

Eisenhower Turned Over By Galesburg
There aren't a lot of home runs in basketball. The Decatur Eisenhower Panthers girls basketball team could tell you that.
Eisenhower buried themselves in a matchup by committing a total of 27 turnovers while Galesburg had three players scoring in double digits in their 80-50 win over the Panthers.
With four passes thrown down court looking for a quick transition layup, the Panthers came up dry and with eight turnovers with 3:56 left in the first quarter still to play, Eisenhower saw themselves trailing 10-2 after Jessica Lieber's 3-point shot.
"I told the girls that they were going to lure them into wanting to do that." said coach Sean Flaherty. "The turnovers were just terrible for us."
With the Silver Streaks leading scorer staying relatively quiet early on, it was junior guard Sharron Diggens making the most noise. Diggins used her quickness to drive constantly to the basket and drew five of Eisenhower's total 16 first half fouls on her, and converted 8-10 free throws.
With this Galesburg team anyone could lead coming off the bench with lineups being rotated every thirty seconds proving to keep everyone well rested with the Silver Streaks commanding a 15-point lead early.
"I told the girls that they were going to be in some unique circumstances with this teams unique style of play. I'm still proud of my girls with their effort tonight,"said Flaherty.
More woes came to Eisenhower after Tazania Jones picked up the teams seventh foul with 3:30 left in the first quarter left. Galesburg took advantage with making 12 of 18 free throws attempted.
Eisenhower's Sydnee Sturdivant did all she could to keep her team in the ball game by scoring 15 points on 5-10 first half shooting, but it would be Galesburg going into halftime with a 48-26 lead with the Panthers having all ready committed 19 turnovers.
Lieber and Paige Klinck both set each other up on their 3-point shots and the lead grew to thirty points, and the Silver Streaks opened the tournament 1-0 in their pool. The Silver Streaks ended the game shooting 7-29 from three point range.
Lieber finished with 15 points and five assists, while Diggins led Galesburg with 16 points by converting 12-14 free throws.
Shay Robinson may have not done a lot of scoring for the Panthers, but finished the game with five blocks. Sturdivant led the Panthers in scoring by 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Flaherty said, "She's an all around player for us. The girls are in good spirits, and we are looking for a better game tomorrow."

Taylorville Buckles Paris
Cayla Koffman did all she could since the start of the whistle.
The junior center would lead Paris with 12 points on 6-10 shooting and 11 rebounds, but it would be Taylorville's senior, Savannah Buckles that would steal the spotlight. Buckles would shoot 7-9 from three point range to finish with 25 points to lead Taylorville to a 67-51 win over Paris.
"I thought Savanah did a great job of getting open,"said Taylorville coach Carey McVickers. "She was doing great setting up her shot and finding a way to get it in."
Paris's center turned three offensive rebonds into baskets and before anyone could double check the score, it was 11-6 in favor of the Tigers.
After a 3-point basket by Savannah Buckles, the Lady Tornadoes saw a chance to tie. Markie Childers would drive to the basket and draw the foul from Hoffman and convert on the basket as well as the free throw to give Taylorville the lead.
Hoffman didn't quit under the glass and ended the first quarter with eight rebounds while supplying eight points to keep Paris only down three.
"I think they found a way to contain Kayla,"said Paris coach Bob Abernathy. "In the second half I thought she did some great things, but you got to give Taylorville credit for shutting her down."
The tandem of Buckles and Childers continued in the opening minute of the second quarter with the help of Chrissie Weber's fourth steal of the ball game setting up their respected 3-point shots to open the a 15-2 run to break open the score 29-14.
Baskets by Morgan Englum and Nique Tyler, and a 3-point basket by Jessica Hopper cut the lead down to nine, and had the Tigers momentum back on track, but Buckles once again was a buzzkill. Her back-to-back 3-point baskets and assist to Claire Nolan as the halftime buzzer had the Lady Tornadoes scoring the last eight points of the half and a 16-point lead.
McVickers said, "We run a motion offense and Savannnah (Buckles) did a nice job of setting up our players and cutting to the inside and outside."
With Koffman picking up her fourth foul with 4:17 left in the third quarter, the Lady Tornadoes took advantage of her presence with a 10-0 run with Koffman on the bench.
Alex Norville and Weber would make back-to-back baskets, and Buckels would swish in her sixth and seventh trey of the night on the midst of scoring 11 third quarter points to stretch the lead over twenty points.
The Lady Tigers would have have solid performances from starters Nique Tyler, five points and eight rebounds, Leslie Gates, nine points, and Jessica Hopper would come off the bench to supply 11 points and two steals.
Taylorville's Weber finished five assists and steals to play a dominating factor in the win.
