Classic showdown
With an easy 63-25 victory against Bloomington, the Richwood girls battle two-time defending champion Springfield on Wednesday in the second round of the Class 3A-4A State Farm Holiday Classic in Normal.
With four titles, the Knights own the highest winning percentage (minimum 15 games) at the Holiday Classic at .854 (35-6 after Tuesday’s game).
The Senators and Knights have never met at the tournament, but Springfield owns two regular-season wins in the past three years (2008-2009 before Richwoods won the state title and in 2009-2010).
Potters lock down SH-G
Morton held Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin to 12 points through the first three quarters before subbing heavily in the fourth, when there was a running clock.
“We played lock-down defense the third quarter (when Bloomington scored two points) and really the whole second half,” said Morton coach Bob Becker. “That’s what we want to hang our hat on — defend and rebound consistently at a high level. Sarah (Livingston, who scored 12 points in the third quarter) was pretty dominant in the third quarter — our whole team was — but we really clicked around Sarah.”
Clean living Knight
Richwoods senior center Breana Baker has a tendency to get in foul trouble but had no such difficulty Tuesday against Bloomington at the State Farm Holiday Classic.
“We went in the locker room at halftime and we had one turnover and Maggie (Cunningham) pointed out that it was Breana Baker’s, but yet she had no fouls,” said Richwoods coach Todd Hursey. “I said it’s pretty good if you know who had the turnover, then. And Breana has been playing real well the last week. She had a very good tournament at Sterling.”
Big win in Bloomington
The Springfield High boys basketball team had one of the most surprising wins of all the holiday tournaments so far.
The Senators defeated No. 2 seed Chicago North Lawndale 52-41 at the State Farm Holiday Classic in Bloomington for only their second win of the season.
Springfield is coached by Washington High School graduate Matt Reed.
