- This is the fourth in a series of girls' basketball previews on the Illinois Quad-Cities Metro teams. Coming Saturday: Moline Maroons. The United Township girls' basketball team last won the Western Big 6 Conference title in 1992. Yet, for the second straight season, the Panthers are picked to claim the league crown. Third-year coach Justin Shiltz hardly minds that target on his state-rated team's back, though. "We never shy away from expectations,'' Shiltz said ahead of his 1-0 club's second game this season. "We embrace it because it's a lot better than where this program has been before.'' That would be the dark days of the mid-2000s, when UT lost 43 straight Big 6 games. Last season's 19 wins came a win shy of the school's 2000-01 team, the last to win a regional title. "We just want a chance to win a conference and regional title every season,'' Shiltz said. "This is Year 3 for me, and we're getting close to that.'' How close, Shiltz sized up, in addressing the Big 6 questions facing his Big 6 club this season. http://www.qconline.com/archives/qco/display.php?id=570216 |
