My son runs cross country for Coach Hillier. Last week he came home and explained their workout was a "goal run." He explained that Coach Hillier looked at their times and projected what their end of the season goal would be for three miles. Obviously right now they cannot run that pace or time for three miles. But they would run 12 times 1/4 of a mile at that pace. The runner could run their "goal time" for 1/4 of a mile, then rest for one minute, then do it again and again.
I think that is kind of what we try to do in basketball. At the beginning of the year, you try to get players in practice to play at the pace or intensity they will need to play for 32 minutes in a game. While the speed of the game may be uncomfortable in November, with practice it becomes something normal for them as time goes on. The key is to get them to go at that "race pace" in practice.
The purpose of practice is to create situations that simulate games- "goal run."
