Jon Leuer & Jessica Howard

Jon Leuer sent a tweet last night at 10:50pm that he was leaving the Kohl Center at UW. He was just finishing a shooting workout. For those of you who don't know, Leuer is a Wisconsin grad who just got drafted 40th in the recent NBA draft. So it is safe to say he is going to be a millionaire. Obviously his success is no accident.

Jessica Howard, I am sure you know. The last two days, Jessica has asked to go into the gym to shoot on the Gun. Like most teens, she is not a morning person. But the last two days she has gone in at 8:30am and 8:00am so she could make 100-150 threes. The rest of her day was busy so she got up early to shoot.

It struck me to get Leuer's tweet last night and then this morning to watch Jessica come in to shoot that it is more than just a coincidence. They both teach two important lessons by their work:

1- While they have talent, talent is not what has separated them from their peers. Great players separate themselves with their work ethic. These two are successful because of how hard they are willing to work.

2- The average players works out if they have time, the great player makes time. That may mean going in at 10:30 at nite or getting up at 8 in the morning. Stephan Covey says for successful people, they have to remember that "first things come first." That means if something is important, you make sure you find time for it.

Jon and Jessica are great examples of what I really like about basketball. It is a sport which rewards work ethic.
