1. ADULTERY DESTROYS PEOPLE’S LIVES.
Tigers “transgressions” have destroyed his wife and children’s lives. I wonder how the kids at the school he founded are affected by this also. We must understand that adultery has devastating consequences. The results of adultery never end well because it doesn’t hurt people, it destroys people.. Not only does it destroy a spouse and children, it also destroys the people who committed the act. Shame, brokenness, humiliation, lowered self esteem, depression are just some of the consequences that are caused by adultery. As married men we need to focus on the repercussions of adultery and come to grips that it is never worth the cost of destroying lives including our own.
2. ADULTERY CAN RESULT IN LOSING EVERYTHING A PERSON HAS GAINED.
Tiger is on the verge of losing millions. I was reading that over 90 percent of his earnings have come from endorsements. As we all know when scandal hits, endorsements flee. When someone commits adultery what they’re ultimately saying is, “I’m willing to lose what has taken years to gain for moments of pleasures that last briefly.” All the hard work and perseverance that a person has put into getting to where they currently are can be lost in one sensual act. I don’t know of another act that violates the trust and respect of others like the act of adultery. The enjoyment of adultery never outweighs the cost of losing what we’ve gained.
3. TRANSPARENCY IS A MUST IN PEOPLE’S LIVES.
Tiger was able to live a secret lifestyle because he had the money and power to execute every step of his life. As man gains power he also gains the ability to live a secret lifestyle, and secrecy can be dangerous because it leaves us vulnerable. Acts that are done in the dark come out in the light. That’s why it’s essential that a person eliminates living a secret lifestyle. There needs to be a few people that we give permission to have “total access” into our lives on a regular basis. These people must be high character individuals that can be trusted with what we tell them. They also need to be courageous enough to be able to tell us the truth, even if we don’t like it nor want to hear it. That’s REAL ACCOUNTABILITY. I see too many people that rise in power that are surrounded by “yes” men. No matter how much power is gained that is never a good position to be in.
4. WE MUST CHOOSE OUR FRIENDS WISELY.
Tiger didn’t have anyone in his life that would speak the truth to him even though it may cost that person their relationship. Show me your friends and I will see who you are. I believe that friends usually don’t speak the truth to each other because they’re living the same lifestyle. We can’t confront others if we are doing exactly what needs to be confronted. As I get older I’m realizing the importance of an inner circle. What are these men made of? They better have a foundation of high standards if you want to maintain yours.
5. BEING DISCIPLINED IN OUR PUBLIC LIFE MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IF WE ARE NOT DISCIPLINED IN OUR PRIVATE LIFE.
Tiger has been the standard for the intense discipline, work ethic and focus that is required to be the best. It’s a shame to see many talented people display such matchless discipline, determination, and diligence toward their profession, yet allow their personal lives to be characterized by slothfulness. While he focused on being the best in his public life he neglected being the best in his private life. When we start neglecting our core values we are beginning a downfall toward destruction. So what are we neglecting that needs a full force of discipline, focus, and hard work?
